The idea of the language school Talkademy was to transfer the language learning into virtual 3D environments. So it was no longer important where students and teachers were in reality. If the location doesn't matter, the choice of good teachers who speak the language like their native language, increases. For the students, the costs would be reduced because no rooms have to be booked.
Another psychological advantage of the virtual environment is that students lose the fear of speaking a new language.
To meet the playful aspect of learning, games have been implemented. However, in 2009 it was still a big challenge for home users to download, install and interact with the SecondLife application via headset. For this purpose, a virtual TV studio was implemented as part of the diploma thesis, whereby the students in reality were connected with the students in the virtual environment. Thus, it was an opportunity for inspiring interested people for the new way of learning languages.
For the virtual language school Talkademy, founded by the association Offenes Lernen, a prototype was designed and developed to inspire interested persons for the virtual 3D-Environment SecondLife and to learn a language within such an environment. In collaboration with the Talkademy it was identifed that the time span of about one hour for logging in and installing SecondLife marks an obstacle for interested people. This master thesis deals with developing an approach for offering language interested persons the possibility to get in touch with the idea to learn a language within a virtual environment. By presenting the content as a stream it is easy accessible by web browser. The potential customers can experience the stream as a passive viewer or in an active role, in interaction with the 3D-participants in SecondLife. Within this work the technical development was designed, the first prototypes were built and tested. Furthermore content was created to demonstrate the advantages this kind of language courses offer.
